The cheapest and most logical approach would be to get a USB external enclosure for the suspect drive (about $30.00) and put the drive in there. Then try to boot to it. If that fails get a new 2.5 drive for the laptop and install it internal. If all goes well you can reinstall the OS. If the drive is actually good it can be repartitioned and used as an external. id recommend the driver free boot disk for bios flashing
create the boot disk floppy and then add your flash program and bios image to the floppy and reboot, make sure you change the boot order in your bios to check the floppy first.
alternately you may find a boot CD somewhere online or you can create a bootable CD from some CD writing programs and add your flash program to that.
but id recommend you stick with the driver free boot floppy from http://www.bootdisk.com/
