Laptop is froze on boot screen, cannot access setup menu….Help?
I have a friend who has an Acer 3690 Laptop. It’s a few years old and out of warranty. While checking it out, it apparently sticks on Boot screen upon powering on and then freezes up completely and cannot access the setup menu from within system itself.
I’m not sure exactly what happened prior to this situation. What I can say is that she tried running a D2D Disk Recovery in which led to the dismal state that it is in now.
So, if there is anybody out there that can help me get some insight on this for my friend that would be great!! Thanks!
Again, the laptop is almost COMPLETELY non-functioning. Which means the CD-Rom doesn’t work as well and I’m not able to access setup menu to get into the bios or boot options. Possible hardware issues, maybe?
I could be a number of things but if your friend has backups of everything then the absolute best thing to do would be to reload the operating system

For hundreds of years, people diagnosed with mental illness were thought to be hopeless cases, destined to suffer inevitable deterioration. Beginning in the early 1990s, however, providers and policymakers in mental health systems came to promote recovery as their goal. But what does recovery truly mean? For example, to consumers of mental health services, it implies empowerment and greater resources dedicated to healing; to HMOs, it can suggest a means of cost savings when benefits cease upon recovery. This book considers "recovery" from multiple angles. Traditionally, Nora Jacobson notes, recovery was defined as symptom abatement or a return to a normal state of health, but as activists, mental health professionals, and policymakers sought to develop "recovery-oriented" systems, other meanings emerged. Jacobson's analysis describes the complexes of ideas that have defined recovery in various contexts over time. The first meaning, "recovery-as-evidence," involves the theories, statistics, therapies, legislation, and myriad other factors that constituted the first one hundred years of mental health services provision in the United States. "Recovery-as-experience" brought the voices of patients into the conversation, while "recovery-as-ideology" drew on both recovery-as-evidence and recovery-as-experience to rally support for specific approaches and service-delivery models. This in turn became the basis for "recovery-as-policy," which developed as assorted representative bodies, such as commissions and task forces, planned reforms of the mental health system. Finally, "recovery-as-politics" emerged as reformers confronted harsh economic realities and entrenched ideas about evidence, experience, and ideology. Throughout, Jacobson draws on her research in Wisconsin, a state with a long history of innovation in mental health services. Her study there included several years of fieldwork and interviews with the government-appointed groups charged with making recovery policy. I have an Acer Aspire Notebook and I’ve started having problems by Windows XP having problems starting up, I never got to the “Welcome” screen. I have a damaged operating system file…what to do?
My laptop runs Windows 2000 and Windows won’t start up because of a damaged file. I bought a “Master Repair Disk” on ebay that has boot disks and recovery console on it. As instructed I put the disks on floppies, put the first floppy in an external floppy drive and started the computer but it did not respond to the disk at all.
Can you suggest what might be wrong or what I should do now? I want a cheap fix for the problem because it’s an old laptop and not worth putting much money into fixing.
Incidentally, I don’t have the Windows program disks.

That would help to recommend the proper solution…
For example is it the SYSTEM registry file that is corrupt
If it was the following procedure would be the proper fix:
SYSTEM is one of your registry files which Windows needs to start.
Your personal folders such as (pictures, documents etc) should be okay as long as you do not reformat the hard-drive and as long as this error is not a hard-drive hardware error.
Worst case you would need to remove the hard-drive and either put in an external usb kit and attach to a second computer or attach as a second drive to a different computer.
This is a safety precaution to ensure that your critical files are safe.
Next depending on the registry file error or other BSOD error do a Google search to determine the appropriate recovery option.
Most likely you will have to reboot from the install disks and get into the recovery console to either run chkdsk or copy backup registry files into their proper location.
Then after reboot do a system restore to get the computer back to a current state.
There is much good documentation out on the web on this but all steps must be done in order and very carefully.
